Never

The wordmark is the identity, and this is not a second one. It exists for one reason: a square is the one shape DESK ONE cannot go in. Everywhere a word fits, the word is what goes there — nothing in this identity is built on the symbol, and nothing needs it.

Paper, stone and ink — the colours of a quiet room and a well-used desk. Warm rather than clinical, and not one of them raising its voice. Most of what we make is the palest one, because the space is the thing we are actually selling. There is no accent colour, and there is not going to be one: the work should be the brightest thing on the page.Paper, stone and ink — the colours of a quiet room. In the world

The blade signBone face in a charcoal tray, projecting off the building line. One mark, optically centred, and the panel still reading as mostly empty. The panel is what is large, never the lettering. Nothing else on the face: no strapline, no icon, no address.
The reception glassFrosted vinyl at eye height on the lobby glazing. The one surface with a moving ground behind it, so the mark is set larger and reads as a tone rather than a line. Never reversed out of a filled panel, which would turn a door into a sign.

In the hand

The card, backThe limestone face of the duplex sheet, uncoated, with the mark blind debossed into it. Pressed in, no ink at all, and legible only because the raking light catches the edge of the impression. This is the whole of the back, and the stock is uncoated because a coated sheet holds no impression.
The card, frontThe bone face, printed: three lines in one charcoal ink, ranged left into the foot of the card, and the top two thirds left empty. No mark on this face. It is on the other one, and a card carrying it twice has not decided which side it hands over.

Physically printed

The letterheadThe mark small in the top left, and nothing else on the sheet. No rule under it and no printed text block: a letterhead is a sheet somebody is going to write on, and every mark already on it is one the writer has to work around. This is the size the logotype is actually used at, and the margin does more of the work here than the lettering.
The lettering, closeThe same sheet at reading distance. The whole page shows where the mark sits; only this shows what it is — the tracking, the thin stroke, and how little ink the head of a letter actually carries.

A house illustration style

Four people at one table, three seated and turned toward a fourth standing at a board reading DESK

“I think we should have a house illustration style.”“I think we should have a house illustration style.”

Explaining things is the work

We often have to explain a concept as part of the work — to a client, in a proposal, inside a piece we are publishing for them. Having a default style for it, the way IKEA has one, extends the identity into the documentation instead of leaving every explanation to look like whoever drew it.Explaining a concept is part of the work. A default style for it, the way IKEA has one, extends the identity into the documentation.

How a figure is made

Five loose units on the first client’s desk, three locked together on the tenth’s, the library shelf between them
One claim
A figure argues exactly one thing, and it is written down before anything is drawn.
Counted, not shaded
The difference rides on how many and where. Never on area, volume, colour or shade.
Objects, not symbols
Things that exist and behave: blocks, shelves, desks. A learned symbol only ever backs one up.
Two passes
The arrangement is drawn first and the finish second, so the argument is never restyled into place.
One ink on paper
Bone ground, charcoal line, one weight throughout. No fills, no gradients, no accent.
Read back cold
Someone shown the picture and not the claim has to arrive at the claim. If they do not, it is redrawn.

Every figure clears the same six before a pixel is spent, and the last one is the only one that matters: a diagram that needs its caption explained has not worked. The picture beside this list is one that passed — five loose units on the first client’s desk, three locked together on the tenth’s, and the library that made the difference.Every figure clears the same six before a pixel is spent, and the last one is the only one that matters: a diagram that needs its caption explained has not worked.

Negative space

Most of this page is nothing.
That is the point.

Negative space means we leave the gaps alone. One subject to a surface: a sign, a slide, a proposal, an email. Nothing is added to fill a corner. When something has to come out, the space around what is left stays. A crowded page looks like effort, and we sell the opposite: one thing on one desk instead of ten. The calm is what lets the work speak.Negative space means we leave the gaps alone. One subject to a surface, and nothing added to fill a corner. The calm is what lets the work speak.
